What is an Ostomy?

Understanding Ostomy: A Life-Changing Procedure

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening (stoma) in the abdomen to divert waste when the normal digestive or urinary tract cannot function. Common types include colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy. With proper care and guidance, people with ostomies live full, active lives.

  • Colostomy — diverts the colon
  • Ileostomy — diverts the small intestine
  • Urostomy — diverts urine flow

Our Story

Bringing World-Class Wound & Ostomy Care to the Bahamas

Island Ostomy & Wound Treatment Center was founded with a singular mission: to ensure that every patient in the Bahamas has access to compassionate, evidence-based ostomy and wound care — regardless of their background or circumstance.

As a proud affiliate of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN), our practice is grounded in the highest clinical standards. We stay at the forefront of wound care science, from HAPI prevention protocols to the latest eCQM quality measures.

We believe healing is not just a clinical process — it is a deeply human one. Every patient who walks through our doors is treated with dignity, warmth, and the individualized attention they deserve.
